Donna Grantis HDTV Episode of “Guitar Picks”

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to mix 5.1 for a number of really cool HDTV shows. One of these shows called “Guitar Picks” – the #1 HDTV show on TreasureHD last week – will feature AMAZING guitarist Donna Grantis filmed during a recent session at Sly-Fi Chapel. Donna has been in at the Chapel cutting guitars and mixing her upcoming “Electric Band” disc. I believe it’s only a matter of time before Donna blows up internationally. The “Guitar Picks” episode should air in the coming weeks… look for it!!

Emily Workman was featured artist on the MIX97 morning show with Sean Kelly and Orlena Cain this morning, Tuesday March 22 between 7:45 and 8:15AM! The feature included an interview with the 16 year-old Sly-Fi artist and she debuted the new mix of her single “Teenage Drama Queen”!! This meant a lot…

I spend the vast majority of my life and time in the studio making music of the “commercial” sort. And I love it very much. But every once in a while it’s exciting to work on a record unconfined by the boundaries of the mainstream. Enter my good friend, Percy Adler. He is a rather intense individual with a love of guitars and the spirit of improvisation. We made a record together last year called “Strike 4″. I’m not sure it’s even what I would consider “music”. It’s “sound”… made with guitars, amps, pedals and microphones. And for lack of a better term it should probably be called “art”, or at least “arty”. Certainly it won’t be a record for everyone, perhaps only a dedicated few, but the emotional content of these tracks… improvisations… compositions… really inspired me…

I’m one of the lucky ones – so many fantastic things have happened in my life in music. But today, the words in this review meant an awful lot to me, so I wanted to share…

A music review by Richard M. Grove

“Strike 4” by Percy Nils Adler

There is genius buried in these tracks of frenetic cacophony. Savage but tamed dissonance came to mind as I struggled to let down my preconceptions of what music is. If you insist on giving it a label you can call it Post Rock Experimental but don’t you dare buy this album if you are not willing to be challenged by the boundaries of what you might think music is or should be or should do to you. Once I settled in and stopped looking for a toe tapper I could find the brutal beauty in the intense complexity the same way I find beauty in the sounds of ice crashing, rumbling, churning against rock in a wind howling storm. “Strike 4” is experimental and so far to the left of regular rock that you will have to stop and switch gears to experience it fully. Time travel back to the foundation that Jimi Hendrix’s mind crashing “Machine Gun” laid or his live Woodstock performance of “Star Spangled Banner” and you will get a glimpse of what Adler is achieving in “Strike 4”.

This album by Percy Nils Adler will give full blown meaning to any moment of madness that you might have had as your life careened out of control. Before you pull the trigger, listen, I mean really listen, to the luminosity between the notes of this stunning album. When you have finally heard it you will have learned something more about the human soul that you did not know was there.

At the end of the journey be ready to be stunned by the final track “I Found You”. I was, and I am being literal here, brought to tears with the profundity of this finale. NO – please don’t just zip to the end of the album and listen to the last track. It is the journey, as in life, that allows you to see the beauty in the piece. Life is not all sunsets and glory, but you already know that. If you don’t know this then you more than anyone need to listen to and comprehend this album.

Listen to this work stone cold sober. If not it will blow your mind and you will miss the significance of the boundaries broken. I am putting this album on my iPod smack dab between Philip Glass’s “Mishima” and Hungarian composer Béla Bartók’ concert for Orchestra, Sz116.

Rikki Montgomery #1 on MIX97… Miss Emily “Thank You” concert

Four days after the morning show interview and first time “Always” was played on MIX97, Rikki Montgomery reached #1 on the Top 6@6 on Friday with over 9000 votes!! She was still #1 yesterday with the votes rocketing to 16000+!!! Keep voting so we can keep her the #1 most requested song… http://www.mix97.com/top6.php

The Miss Emily “Thank You” concert/Square2 Magazine launch at the studio on Saturday was phenomenal. A very special, and very intimate performance, that we just happen to have caught on hard disk!!! Hopefully the night will be available as a CD in the near future. :) Thanks to all those that made it out to the show…

GREAT day at MIX97!

Crazy AMAZING day in the world of Rikki Montgomery today! Started with a great interview with Sean and Orlena on the MIX97 morning show, and the single “Always” was spun for the first time on radio. This went so well she was asked to do a taped interview for “Weekend Magazine” on CJBQ 800 that’ll be aired this weekend (Saturday @ 10AM or Sunday @ 12:30PM). We left the station for a bit and when we returned to do the second interview, “Always” was spinning again! A little surreal for sure! Then following the second interview, Rikki was asked to perform in the MIX97 Prime Time Holiday Special concert at Empire Theatre on November 30… and if that wasn’t enough, “Always” was in the Top 6 at 6!!! Make sure you listen in tomorrow and vote!!

From the MIX97 Facebook Page:

“Sean & Orlena’s favorite artist have been getting alot of votes/call in’s for tonights Top 6@6…… Rikki Montgomery the 16 year old Bayside Secondary student.”

And some facebook wall feedback:

“you were great on the radio today rikki!
you told me you sang, but damn.
respect, yo.”

RIKKI YOUR SONG IS NUTS ♥
remember me when youre famous ;)

RIKKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You gave me goose bumps when I listened to your song. Way to go, girlfriend! :)

Rikki Montgomery on MIX97 morning show

Tune into MIX97 this morning, Tuesday September 21 at 7:30AM! They’ll be spinning and interviewing 16 year-old Sly-Fi artist Rikki Montgomery on the morning show!! For those out of the area you can listen online here http://www.mix97.com/

16 year-old Bayside Secondary student Rikki Montgomery always knew she wanted to sing. But it wasn’t until her high school drama teacher took matters into his own hands that she got the chance… He started asking around, and finally a referral from an employee at Harmony Music led them to Sly-Fi Chapel recording studios in Trenton to meet producer/songwriter Brent Bodrug. Brent was immediately struck by Rikki’s raw talent and ability to deliver a lyric. They soon after began writing and recording, and a year later released Rikki’s first CD “Love, Lust, & Lies”… It started to sell quickly. And people began to talk. An anonymous letter to the EMC newspaper raving about the disc led to a story in the paper. A chance meeting between a ten acre employee and a concert promoter led to a gig opening for Jesse Farrell at the Tweed Stampede… all within a few weeks after the release…

Through the songwriting process Rikki learned that she doesn’t have the best taste in guys… but she also learned in her own words that “I can do whatever I think I can’t…”

Really excited about this! Sly-Fi Chapel and Square2 Magazine present Emily Fennell – The “Thank You” Concert… this “Austin City Limits” style in-studio show will be video and audio recorded for future release. It will be a licensed event courtesy of The Acoustic Grill, and all of our guests will receive a copy of the brand new issue of Square2, featuring an article on Emily and a disc with an exclusive, unreleased recording of Emily’s brand new song “The Struggle”…

Emily Fennell was voted #1 in the Lilith Fair indie competition for Toronto earlier this year. We are putting on this show to say “thank you” to all the people that voted!

Tickets are $20, and only available in advance as seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased directly by calling or emailing me at the Chapel, and will be available shortly at Books & Co. or Spark Box Studio in Picton.

It’s going to be a special show. Hope you can make it… :)

Welcome!!

My name is Brent. I record songs. Sometimes I help people come up with them too, but not always. A couple of years ago i bought an old church and put some drums, guitars, and pianos in there. Now I call it a recording studio. It’s pretty cool… I’ve worked with some people you’ve probably heard of and some you haven’t. But they all have one thing in common – they’re pretty darn talented. If I haven’t worked with you before then you could give me a call or send me an email. We could hang for a bit and talk. I make really good coffee. And I have really comfortable sofas.
